Introducing Sassy Molassy Performance Granola!

Maybe you’ve met Performance Granola’s first born, PB&J All Day. Its peanut buttery crunch and pops of berries stole the snack hearts of many, and we knew it’d be a tough job coming up with a second flavor to match PBJ’s popularity.

Classic sophomore struggle.

We knew a few things for sure: it needed to taste good (duh), and be full of ingredients that not only tasted good but made you FEEL good. It is PERFORMANCE granola, after all.

The base of rolled oats tossed in coconut oil was our canvas, and Elyse Kopecky (co-author of the Run Fast. Eat Slow. cookbooks) got cracking in the kitchen, pulling superfood after superfood from her pantry in search of the perfect balance of foodie and athlete benefits.

Blackstrap molasses, which is rich in iron and potassium (common deficiencies in athletes), took the anchor role as both a flavor and liquid to help hold the granola “clumps” together. It’s a highly functioning sweetener - essentially what’s left over after raw sugar cane has been fully extracted - and is super concentrated without being overly sweet, lending to Sassy’s warm and spicy overall flavor.

Pops of tart goji berries add texture and liveliness, plus a host of vitamins and minerals and a surprising amount of protein for a modest little berry. (Who knew?!) Coconut flakes give a spring of flavor, and to add some crunch and healthy fat, a big old handful of sunflower seeds and pepitas. From there we spiced it up with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory cinnamon and ginger, completing the sweet-yet-spicy profile while adding some additional benefits.

Whether you’re adding it to your morning yogurt, popping handfuls at your desk, or reaching for a little boost before a workout, Sassy Molassy is ready to step up to the plate. But it’s favorite use around here? Late night snacking.

“This is my go-to granola for late night snacking because it’s high in essential minerals for sleep and it gives my body a boost of iron from the molasses,”says Elyse. As a busy mom of two and avid runner, she knows a thing or two about the importance of a good night’s sleep.
